Make a little vacation time go a long way.
Playa del Rey
After a trek through dunes and marshes of the Ballona Wetlands (watching for the endangered Belding’s Savannah Sparrow nesting in the pickleweed), return to your natural habitat: the bar at month-old Playa Cantina for ceviche, shrimp tacos, and carne asada-topped French fries. If one (or six) too many mexicolas means you’re staying the night, order a churro for the walk and stumble up the boulevard to the Inn at Playa del Rey. Fingers crossed one of the 21 cush rooms is available.
It looks like Japan (behold the high-tech Toto toilets in every WC) and smells like Japan (Gonpachi’s fish is flown fresh from the Tsukiji market in Tokyo). But, nope, it’s the recently opened Miyako Hybrid Hotel, and you’re in Torrance. Escape inside Spa Relaken with herbal body treatments and aromatherapy facials, or lay out in the ganban-yoku, a spacious sauna lined in mineral rocks from Kyushu that’s as detoxifying as it is restorative.
A triple threat to your stress levels: yoga, Pilates, and surfing retreats at Sagrada Wellness, well-known for its long-weekend getaways to San Miguel Allende. The Southern California three- or four-night stays include two classes a day, leaving plenty of time to bike or hike the two-acre estate, hoof it to nearby Pitas Point, book a massage, make the most of the verandas, or head to town for local flavor like olive oil and persimmon walnut candy. It also offers daily wine tastings. Hey, it’s what’s good for you.
Sifting through the flood of new home-stay sites, we found the tightly edited collection on Boutique-Homes.com to be one of our favorites — not entirely surprising, given it was recently launched by the designers/proprietors of Yelapa gem Verana. From L.A., you could be shacked up in a High Sierra A-frame, off the grid in Pioneertown, or beaching it in Malibu in just a few hours. From your desk, the corral of stunning crash pads in unexpected locations will have you daydreaming in no time at all.
